Using the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, President Johnson sent in 3,500 Marines, the first official troops, to South Vietnam. By the end of the year, there were 200,000 US troops in Vietnam.

Because of two naval battles between the North Vietnamese Navy and the US Navy in the Gulf of Tonkin (South China Sea) on August 2 and 4, 1964.

While the first was confirmed as an actual naval engagement, the second one has widely been seen as a radar error on the part of the U.S. Navy.

Congress passed the Golf of Tonkin Resolution on August 7, 1964, giving U.S. military forces permission to escalate combat operations in Vietnam.
