The Roman military was the first proffesional army in the world, and the first army to standardize equipment. This would not be done again until the 19th century.

At its peak, Rome conquered nearly all of the known world, and millions of people lived and died within Roman borders.

Rome itself was the first modern city in the world, with a modern sewer system, running water, six-story apartment buildings, a police force, post offices, three theatres, a stadium, and a population of over one million people.

Romans built a network of standardized roads across the Republic/Empire, some of which still exist. This network impacted economy and allowed fast transport and precise deliveries.

Romans invented concrete, the modern calendar (by Julius Caesar himself), symbols like "&" and abrevations such as "etc.", grid city structure, public newspaper, scissors, candles, showers, modern law, fast curing cement, surgical tools, and many other things still used today.

The ancient Romans were the people of the city of Rome (which still exists and is now the capital of Italy and the seat of the pope). They created an empire which was the second largest antiquity saw and the 17th largest one in history. It covered Western Europe up to the river Rhine and southern and part of central Germany, the Balkan Peninsula (south-eastern Europe) the Middle East west of Iran and north of Saudi Arabia, and North Africa.

The Romans are famous for building the stone-paved roads and the aqueducts (water conduits which brought water from the mountains to the towns) and for being the first people to make extensive use of the arch which, with its great load-bearing capacity, enabled them to build large scale buildings (the Colosseum is the most famous one) and much longer bridges. They also invented a system of underfloor central heating. The prowess of the roman army is legendary.

The Romans are also famous for their art, especially sculpture, architecture, mosaics and frescoes. Roman statues and architecture influenced European sculpture and architecture from the 15th century to the 20th century. Latin literature also influenced European literature during the same time period. The Romans were Latins and spoke Latin. Western European languages have adopted and adapted the Latin alphabet. Five languages (Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Romanian) are languages derived from Latin.

The Romans have given us Christianity. This religion stated in Judea, which was part of the Roman Empire. It spread around the Roman Empire. The early development of Catholic and Orthodox Christianity occurred in the Roman days.
