Note I am speaking mainly of Jamaica as that is where I am from, a person of Indian decent, recouting what we were taught in school. The Indians that are now in the Caribbean are the decendents of indentured servants brought over by the British at the end of the slavery era, the british needed a new work force because the former African slaves were now unwilling to work without high pay, the Indian workers were paid considerably less than their African counterparts.This occoured between 1845 and 1920 thereabouts. With indenture, the Indians were promised pay for work they would begin upon arrival in the Caribbean Islands, from this pay, the plantation owners would take their own percentage for the Indian workers room, board, food and clothing, a sort of modern day fuedalism. Suffice it to say, usually at harvest time, the workers would find themselves owing more than they were paid which kept them in servitude. Many Indians tried to return to India, but most were not welcomed back by the Indian government as they usually came back with little to no earnings as they usually worked out ther 1 to 5 year contracts with nothing to show for it, or bought out their contracts when they could. Many were unable to return to Indian as well because the management companies would not pay for the cost of having them sent back to India, most ships would not take them unless the ships were filled to capacity and some ships became so full that many were abandoned. Many decided to stay and make the best of their situations. With newly acquired skills that set up businesses and thrived in their new culture, eventually intermarrying (in Jamaica as far as I know) with the larger African population, over time most became christian and acquired anglicanized last names like Williams for instance. the majority of Indians in the English speaking Caribbean came from Uttar Pradesh and Western Bihar.
