∙ 13y agoThe Last Supper was where Jesus symbolically showed the disciples what He was about to do for mankind. He broke the bread, because His body suffered for us. He passed the wine, because it symbolizes His shed blood for our sin.

The painting is supposed to reflect the different reactions to Jesus' pronouncement that he would be betrayed by someone at the table.
There are reasons put forth for WHY the painting was done. Leonardo da vinci at the time was trying out a new painting medium (Tempura) - which is why the painting is in such bad shape. Many conspiracy theories are around. But here is something to consider.
The painting contains several references to the number 3, which represents the Christian belief in the Holy Trinity. The Apostles are seated in groupings of three; there are three windows behind Jesus; and the shape of Jesus' figure resembles a triangle.
There may have been other references that have since been lost as the painting deteriorated.

∙ 9y agoIt is Leonardo Da Vinci's interpretation of each of the Apostles to the news that Jesus would be betrayed that evening and would be crucified to death. The Lord's Supper is the Passover meal - the 4th Passover Jesus celebrated with His disciples and last meal on earth.
