There is no indication that there were three. Only that they gave three gifts.
There might have been two. There might have been six. We don't know.
More than likely, these Magi, or Astrologers, went back to their own country.
They went back home by a different route so they would not have to tell Herod where Jesus was. They knew Herod wanted to kill him, but they believed Jesus was the Messiah and didn't want him dead.
They went back telling everybody on the way.

The first people that visited Jesus as a baby were the shepherds. The shepherds were visited by an angel and were told about Jesus' birth.
Jesus was visited by the 3 wise men who brought him gifts of Myrrh, Frankincense and gold.
Angels were gods messengers, and they told the word of the birth of Jesus to humble shepards.
