They went home, got jobs, raised families, and lived utterly normal lives. Michael Montagne Not all soldiers could go home. For example Poland was under soviet occupation and lots of soldiers fighting inthe resistans or in the Polish Army in the west went to prisson o were killed.

At the end of WW1 the vast majority were conscripts. They went home and. as far as possible, they returned to their previous occupations. Some professional soldiers became Right-wing mercenaries and a small number of these later joined the SS.
