In the Dred Scott decision, the Court held that people who had been slaves, or who descended from slaves, were not protected by the Constitution and could never be US citizens. Without citizenship status, African-Americans were denied access to the courts, and couldn't sue for their freedom, even if they had a contractual agreement granting them free status.
The Supreme Court also ruled that Congress had no right to prohibit slavery, nullifying the Missouri Compromise.
The Court's decision in this case was overturned by the Thirteenth Amendment, prohibiting slavery.

In 1857, the US Supreme Court heard the case of Dredd Scott v. Sanford. Scott, a former slave, ( he and others thought so ) was deemed to remain a slave. The Court also ruled that Blacks could never become US citizens and also as non-citizens had no recourse to the US court system. Blacks were therefore not eligible to vote or hold public office. Nor were they eligible to sit on a jury. Therefore the Court endorsed slavery.
Uh...what? What case are you referring to?
the supreme court did not end slavery. Congress did that with the 13th ammendment.
The Dred Scott decision
The Dred Scott ruling did not move the country closer to ending slavery. It astonished the Abolitionists by invoking the original terms of the Constitution - that a man's property was sacred, and that slaves were property. It widened the division.

Traffic moved much more quickly once the highwy was widened. His economic plan only widened the gap between the rich and the poor. My sister's feet widened when she was pregnant with twins. To accomodate a third car, carpenters widened our garage.
The Dred Scott verdict widened the divisions between North and South. The South was delighted to hear that slavery was legal in every state of the Union, because of the Supreme Court's interpretation of the word 'property' in the Constitution. The Northern abolitionists - still a small minority, but highly influential - were outraged at this suggestion.
During the American Civil War, the Union's fundamental goal was to preserve the 'indissoluble union' of the United States of America. As the war progressed, the basic goal for the North widened to include the abolition of slavery.
