The U.S. and the Soviet Union never officially declared war and fought. The period of time you are referring to is the cold war. Where the U.S. was basically competing against soviet Russia. They were competing for the most arms, space race and even at the Olympics. So to answer your question no they did not fight.
The only time American and Soviet Troops ever met in battle was during the Archangelsk occupation during the Russian Civil War.

The Cold War, but only by proxy in that they supported opposite sides, in such wars as the Korean War and the Vietnamese War. However, there was never any direct fighting between US and Soviet troops.

It was called the Cold War, and it was not fought like other wars. The fighting was done with spies, Propaganda, arms races, and Third World surrogotes, but the US and Soviet Union remained officially at peace with each other.
