The Egypian god Thoth appears in writings variously as a man with the head of an ibis, holding a writing palette; an Ibis or as a baboon. He was the god of writing & knowledge, he gave the gift of hieroglyphic writing to he ancient Egyptians and was connected with the moon.

Depends on what you read... I've read some obsecure info that states it was believed Thoth preserved knowledge of the craft of masonry. Some portray Him as an Ibis, while others say he was a Baboon/Ibis God. He is often connected with the Moon, and referred to as a Moon God. However, more often than not, Thoth is referred to as a God of Wisdom, and of Record Keeping. He is accredited with inventing Hieroglyphs and as such rules all areas of writing. He is also closely associated with astronomy, magic, the Underworld, and the arts.

--------------

Imagery of him often coincides with those of scribes, and some scholars would say he was sort of a patron god of scribes. A good example of this is "Ramessesnakht as a Scribe"... It's a Granodiorite piece about 80cm in height, found in the Temple at Karnak, dated to the reign of Ramesses VI during the the 20th Dynasty. He has also been depicted as a "ba", sort of like a god that resides within a person.

Thoth was the God of Equilibrium, when your heart was weighed against the feather in death he would jot it down, if it was heavier Thoth would feed it to Ammut and you would be lost. if it wasnt you passed into the afterlife. He likely had other jobs too or was worshipped for other things

Thoth was the ancient Egyptian god of wisdom, learning, science, and the moon. He was also the scribe of the gods, protector of Osiris and Isis, and the only god who knew how to write and keep records, making him a very important god. He was also the only one who could presuade Tefnut to come back to Egypt after she ran away from her father, Ra.

Definitely one of the most important (and most awesome!!!) ancient Egyptian gods.
