I remember wondering why all the grownups were so upset and nervous. The reason for the upset was obvious... why everyone was nervous? Years later I asked one of them. They had no way of knowing if this was the opening gambit of WWIII. The possibility existed that the Soviets were making their moves during the shambles of the transition. They honestly didn't know if missiles were on their way.
