Muslims observe five formal prayers each day. The timings of these prayers are spaced fairly evenly throughout the day, so that one is constantly reminded of God and given opportunities to seek His guidance and forgiveness.

Muslims observe the formal prayers at the following times:

Fajr (pre-dawn): This prayer starts off the day with the remembrance of God; it is performed before sunrise.

Dhuhr (noon): After the day's work has begun, one breaks shortly after noon to again remember God and seek His guidance.

'Asr (afternoon): In the late afternoon, people are usually busy wrapping up the day's work, getting kids home from school, etc. It is an important time to take a few minutes to remember God and the greater meaning of our lives.

Maghrib (sunset): Just after the sun goes down, Muslims remember God again as the day begins to come to a close.

'Isha (evening): Before retiring for the night, Muslims again take time to remember God's presence, guidance, mercy, and forgiveness.

Muslims have special occasions for prayer throughout the year, but pray 5 times a day otherwise.

Daily prayer times :

-Fajr - Before sunrise.

-Duhr - After the sun begins to decline from its zenith

-Asr - Mid-afternoon

-Maghrib - Just after sunset

-Isha-night

Men are also mandated to attend weekly prayers at the mosque every Friday; this prayer, known as Jumaa, consists of a sermon and a prayer, and takes the place of Duhr.

See related link to find local prayer times for your area.
It is mandatory for a Muslim to pray 5 times a day.

  • The first prayer is called Fajr: it is prayed before sunrise (in Houston right now the time starts at 6:01 am)
  • The second prayer is Dhuhr: it is prayed at noon (in Houston right now the time starts at 1:09pm)
  • The third prayer is called Asr: it starts at like after midday/afternoon (in Houston right now the time starts at 4:09pm)
  • The fourth prayer is called maghrib: it starts at sunset, but not after the sun has completely set (in Houston right now the time starts at 6:59 pm)
  • The fifth prayer is called Isha: this is after the sun completely sets (in Houston right now the time starts at 8:14 pm)

These are the times for October 8th 2010, the times change depending on the sun and whether it is daylight savings time or not. Here is a website that gives you the 5 mandatory prayer timings in the related links below.

Muslims also pray when they feel like asking Allah (God) for something they need or for help, when they need to make a decision (this is called istikharra), and extra prayers for good deeds and worship.
