The South had several advantages over the North. First, the South was fighting for preservation; if they lost the war, the North would crush their government and re-absorb them back into the Union. These Southern men were fighting for a cause they believed in, which makes them much more motivated and determined than their Northern counterparts, who were on a campaign to conquest. Second, for the latter portion of the war the battles were fought on Southern territory. This increased a soldiers resolve because they were defending their children, their wives, their mothers and everything they held dear to them.

The Confederate rank-&-file were an aggressive and soldierlike breed, raring for a darn good fight.
There was a stronger cavalry tradition - most young men owned at least one horse.
The Confederates (mostly) did not have to do the invading - they just had t defend the homeland against the invader, which was a simple and emotive mission.
(At the beginning) They expected to export their cotton in exchange for war supplies, and gain official recognition and military aid from Britain and France.
