Julius Caesar's so-called ailment is unknown. For years the ancient writers' diagnosis of epilepsy was accepted. However modern research and study points to Caesar having low blood sugar or hypoglycemia, whose symptoms can mimic epilepsy. The ancients knew nothing of blood sugars and their effects, but the were familiar with epilepsy, so they automatically labeled Caesar an epileptic.

However modern studies of Caesar's lifestyle and symptoms cast doubt on this and there's a school of thought that says that Caesar suffered from hypoglycemia, the symptoms of which are the same as epilepsy. There has even been a paper written claiming that he had a brain tumor!
