Since they established their Capital, Jamestown, on a swampy lowland, they also had a river that funneled through a 'mucky' area, which filled it with, well, muck. Water that they had to drink.

They suffered from many diseases, from typhoid to starvation. Their original number of settlers were cut in half because of starvation and diseases.

Alcoholism killed the pilgrims. You see, several weeks following the first Thanksgiving, the pilgrims found a stash of vodka that was left behind by the Indians. The Pilgrims became drunk and lazy and stopped tending to their crops and livestock and soon ran out of food.

After they died out, the Canadians came down on their way to vacation in Florida. They found the Pilgrims settlements and decided to rebuild them. They weren't attracted to the vodka because they already had a tolerance for dark beer. They like the area so much that they decided to stay and ended up building America.
