Parasympathetic is the stimulator and the sympathetic is the one that calms. Many drugs mimic this system

sympathetic is fight or flight (increases your heart rate, dilates your pupils, dilates your airways, decreases gastic motility). It is controlled by the sympathetic chain of nerves.

Parasympathetic is 'rest and digest' (decreases heart rate, constricts pupils, dilates airways and increases gastic motility). It is controlled by the vagus nerve.

The sympathetic nervous system is responsible for fight or flight. The sympathetic nervous system is activated when you are aroused. for example fight or flight may more than likely kick in when you are being chased by a wild animal.
