Yes, Germans DO exchange gifts at Christmas, and celebrate it in a very similar way to how it's commemmorated in the English-speaking world. In fact, the Christmas Tree is a German tradition, and was introduced to the rest of the world by Queen Victoria's consort Prince Albert. Germans place much more emphasis on having Christmas Markets though, where toys, gifts and food are sold, and where there are funfairs and (if it's snowy enough) sleigh rides.
However, they place a much greater emphasis upon Easter than we do, and celebrate this also with gifts.
