Romanian kids like decorating the Christmas tree. They used to make some of the decorations themselves, but nowadays most are plastic and bought at the supermarket.

During Christmas season, some children gather in groups and sing carols, especially in the rural areas (city folk don't seem to like it anymore, and many refuse to open their doors when they hear carols).

They also enjoy making a lot of noise, using fire-crackers and a special, decorated whip, called "pluguşor." (some start practicing how to make loud noises with that whip since November...)

But I suppose the best part for them is waking up on Christmas morning, to find the presents under the tree.

Some Romanian parents put coins in the pockets of their children in order for them to have a bountiful new year. Also, they place bread under the table to bring luck for the whole family. Wheat is placed under the table cloth to bring good crops.

-houses: A Christmas Tree, with tinsel garlands, electric lights and Christmas balls (or baubles, whatever you want to call them) hung in it, and instead of an angel on top they put a star (which symbolizes the Bethlehem star). They might put candy (usually chocolates) on the tree for the children to eat on Christmas morning. The presents are placed under the tree (they do believe in Santa Clause, btw) Christmas lights, fir branches around the house and mistletoe are quite commonplace. No socks are hung, there are no candles in the tree (electric lights only) and no red-and-white candy sticks. -streets (I live in Bucharest, the capital): Usually Christmas lights are hung between light poles along the most important streets and boulevards (this is not limited to the center of the city); giant Christmas trees are placed and lit in central areas (the one at Piata Unirii is a sort of tradition by now). Most cities are decorated this way, not just the capital. disclaimer: this was the city view on Christmas, I don't think it's the same everywhere.

Romanian kids are usually having fun with other kids in the parks. If they can't go outside, they prefer computer games, Messenger and You Tube, because they really like music.
