It depends on the species but the female will normally have a more rounded belly as she fills up with eggs. Also you will notice that the males will be paying her more attention and chasing her around the tank as she gets ready to lay her eggs.
Wormlike is what baby hoverflies look like.
Specifically, the hoverfly (Syrphidae family) goes through a complete metamorphosis of egg, juvenile, pupa and adult. The baby or juvenile stage is no predictor of the mature stage's appearance. The baby hoverfly undergoes a larval stage during which it is a legless, 1/2-inch (1.27-centimeter), pale-colored, worm-like maggot.

because of the chromosomes the parents will give 23 of their chromosomes to the baby born and then that baby has 46 chromosomes in all.this method is called mitosis.
Species are traditionally given a two part Latin name, this is consistent with Linnaean taxonomy. Organisms are allocated to Genera, Families, Orders, Classes, Plyla and Kingdoms.Linnaean taxonomy relies heavily on morphology to associate and classify organisms - i.e. if it looks like a wasp and it flies like a wasp and it sounds like a wasp then... oh actually sometimes it's a hover fly.The system was developed before biologists found evidence for convergent evolution - hover flies evolving to look like wasps is an example of Batesian mimicry.Extra CreditThis works fine for complex plants and animals, but isn't so effective when classifying micro-organisms, phylogenetics which classifies organisms by their relatedness is probably more useful - the concept of a species tends to breakdown when considering bacteria.
What you saw is the Eristalis Tenax also known as the Drone Fly or Hover Fly.
Because no one wants to mess with a wasp, therefore by looking like a wasp, it can frighten off potential predators.
Baby flies are called maggots. Maggots are what hatch from fly eggs. Maggots then turn into pupae and finally emerge as house flies. There is really no such thing as baby flies, only flies that may appear smaller in size.
