∙ 12y agoActually, it's not the same. Baking soda is a leavening agent (it makes things rise). It reacts strongly with water, creating carbon dioxide gas which makes baked goods rise. Corn starch does not make things rise (at all)- it is just the flour from the corn plant. It is unreactive with water. (In the UK it's more commonly called "corn flour"). Cornflour is often used to thicken sauces.

Because baking soda is NaHCO3 and starch is (C6H10O5). Getting starch in packs of baking soda would be like getting mincemeat in your orange juice. It's not what you're buying.
