The top number in the blood pressure fraction is the Systolic pressure, or the amount of pressure put on the walls of the arteries during the contraction and ejection of blood from the left ventricle. The bottom number is called the Diastolic Pressure and it means the lowest pressure in an artery in the moments between beats when your heart is resting.

There are 3 figures when blood pressure is taken:

* The pulse, which is the heart rate per minute * The systolic blood pressure, which is the pressure in the left ventricle when it contracts/beats * The diastolic blood pressure, which is the pressure in the right ventricle when it is relaxed. The blood pressure is normally written as systolic/diastolic. Pulse: xx. eg, 120/80, pulse:75

The two numbers that measure your blood pressure are written like a fraction: one number on top and one on the bottom -- for example, 128/82. The number on top is called the "systolic pressure." Systolic Blood Pressure measures the pressure inside your blood vessels at the moment your heart beats. The number on the bottom is your diastolic pressure. Diastolic Blood Pressure measures the pressure in your blood vessels between heartbeats, when your heart is resting.

Blood pressure has two points

  1. The Systolic Pressure - The top number - refers to the amount of pressure in your arteries during contraction of your heart muscle.
  2. The Diastolic Pressure - The bottom number - refers to the amount of pressure in your arteries when your heart muscle is between beats.
A top number below 140 is generally OK and a bottom number below 90 is generally OK.

Systolic is the top number, diastolic is the bottom number.

Systolic is the peak pressure in the vessels, and is associated with the beat of the heart.

Diastolic is the trough pressure in the vessels, and is associated with the relaxation of the heart.

Systolic blood pressure numbers are a way to measure how much pressure the heart uses when pushing blood through the arteries. A normal number is under 120, anything 120 to 139 will mean one is pre-hypertension, and 140 or over is hypertension meaning there is a greater risk of developing Heart disease.
