Defend a client who has the presumption of innocence until they are proven innocent or guilty. Then if, in some systems, a defense lawyer can apply for an appeal if said person is found guilty.
The role of the defense in a criminal trial is to prove that the crime was not committed. Or if the defendant pleads guilty, the defense is responsible for trying to secure a plea bargain or get the charges reduced.
That depends on whether it's a criminal case or a civil case.
In a criminal case, the defense wins by introducing reasonable doubt that maybe the defendant did not commit the crime. In a civil case, the defense wins by showing that it is at least as likely that the defendant is not responsible for whatever damages happened to the plaintiff.
During a trial, a defendants defense team will cross examine witnesses for the prosecution, place people on the witness stand who are favorable to the defendant, and examine evidence that the prosecutor has submitted to the court. Also, they will raise objections to misleading questions asked by the prosecutor and request a sidebar with the judge and prosecutor on particular issues relevant to the case. They will have already searched for evidence favorable to their client and advise the client about how the proceedings are going. They will answer any questions their client has about the trial.
The defense attorney tries to get the defendant not guilty. The prosecutor is the opposite.
They also plead for a lighter sentence from the judge.
The sides in a civil trial are the same as a criminal trial. There is a plaintiff and a defendant. In a criminal trial the plaintiff is usually the jurisdictioni charging the defendant.
The defendant in a criminal trial is represented by his defense counsel.
In a criminal trial they would be the defense attorney and the prosecutor. In a civil trial they would be the plaintiff's attorney and the defendant's attorney.

The role of a criminal defense attorney is to represent individuals or organizations who have been accused of committing a crime. They work to protect their clients' rights and ensure that they receive a fair trial. This includes investigating the case, negotiating plea deals, and presenting a defense in court. The ultimate goal is to either have the charges dropped or to secure a favorable outcome for their client.
