The basic beginner drum set usually includes (to the far left) a cymbal called a hi hat which looks like two cymbals on top of each other. The cymbal (in the diagram) at the top in the middle is called crash and comes in many sizes from 13" to 19" usually. The cymbal (in the diagram) to the far right is a ride and is usually bigger than the crash. the flat drum beside the hi hat is the most used drum on the drum set and is called a snare drum. The big drum on the bottom is called a bass drum. The two drums on top of the bass drum are called rack toms and the drum on the ground is called a floor tom.

Now that's just the basic drum set. As beginner drummers progress and get money perhaps they tend to want to expand their drum set to mach their talent. Some othe cymbals are the china or Chinese cymbal and almost looks inside out or wavy. Splash cymbals are small ranging from 4" to 12" also there are cymbals called accents that look like splashes but have a very ringy high pitched sound. Cowbells, wood blocks and tamborines are sometimes added to sets to add different dimentions to the sound.

That's about it but there are other unusual peices of equipment that are sometimes added to drum sets.

There are many drums. The most common are the snare and the bass drum.

Others are the timpani and there are other members of the percussion family such as the bells, xylophone, cymbals, crash cymbals, and many others. I'm a percussion player myself so you have a very accurate source....me!

Have any other drum questions? Maybe I can answer them.
