There is no actual reason for the size of their ears. It is just one of their adaptations.

that was not the answer i was looking for

The reason why the rabbits ears are so large is because they have had to adapt to their environment in the wild, as they are a prey animal, and have many predators, they have had to adapt to be able to 'tell' when an predator is in the vicinity.

The rabbits ears are large, which enables them to catch the sound waves more effectively, and hear the sounds in the environment more clearly. they are able to hear predators and humans approach from a distance, and are also able to use their keen sense of smell to tell where and how near a animal or predator is, they are also able to tell the difference between male and female humans from their scent.

Rabbits also use their ears as a temperature control mechanism, to warm themselves up or cool themselves down, they are able to do this because their ears are filled with blood vessels which run close to the surface of the ear. When the animal is too hot the blood vessels are able to cool the blood down from the cool air around the ear, the blood vessels are also able to warm the blood by the ears being in the sun, warming the ears and in turn the animal..... hope this helps :)

To listen and to disperse excess heat as well as to convey moods.

For hearing

and apart from hearing they use it to cool there massive body by flapping it to and fro. due to massive weight of their body they get heated very quickly, so in order to cool themselves they use their ears as flappers.

The major function of Elephant's ears is hearing. Elephants use infra sound to communicate over long distances, Ultra low frequency sound that we can't hear.

The secondary and similarly important function is temperature regulation, blood flow to the ears is used to regulate body temperature, the ears have a large surface area and thus a great ability to radiate heat. Elephants also use their ears to signal emotions like anger, frustration, affection, complacency, to threaten and to swat flies.
elephants uses its ears to hear faraway, elephants also use its ears for hearing predators that seek by the elephants.

Elephant ears are used as a cooling mechanism as they contain a large number of surface blood vessels that increase heat dissipation from the body. Heat loss in increased when the elephant fans it's ears. They also use them to hear.

Elephants mostly use their ears for the following three reasons:

1. Keep cooler in hot weather. Because their blood vessel are close to the surface. Flapping and waving their ears creates a slight breeze that cools their blood a little, thus recirculating cooler blood back into their bodies.

2. The large size and shape of an elephants ears give them superior hearing.

3. Finally, when threatened or aggressive, elephants hold their ears out stiffly to the side of the heads to make themselves look even bigger than they are. This is a display that not only warns other animals, but is meant to intimidate and frighten other aggressors.

Why do elephants have large ears?

so they can hear better The elephants ears are equivalent to the radiators in our cars. As the elephant flaps its ears, the blood that is flowing through the vessels in the elephants ears gets cooled. The bigger the ear better the cooling mechanism.

Why do elephants have pointy ears?

Have you ever noticed how big an elephant's ears are? They're like giant flaps! Elephants' big floppy ears usually measure about 22 square feet in size. - Wow! Although you might think they use these giant ears for better hearing, elephants actually mostly use their big ears for cooling down when it's hot! Because elephants are so big and generally live in hot places like Africa or India, they need a little extra help when it comes to cooling off. Elephant ears are full of veins, the little passageways in the body that are responsible for moving blood around. By flapping their wet ears, the many veins in their ears are cooled, and so is the blood inside those veins! The cooled blood then travels all around the elephant, and can help lower the elephant's body temperature by as much as almost 10 degrees Fahrenheit! That might not sound like a lot, but when it comes to body temperature it's actually a pretty COOL amount!
