Iodine was discovered by the French chemist Barnard Courtois in 1811.

Iodine is a bluish-black, shiny solid. Although it is less reactive than the elements above it in group 17 (fluorine, chlorine and bromine) it still forms compounds with many other elements. Iodine is a non-metal. It's boiling point is 457 K (184 oC) and melting point is 386.6 K (113.5 oC).

Iodine belongs to group 7A ,the Halogens. Belongs to period 5 in the Periodic Table.

Iodine might be used in its pure form, but most of the times it is not used as a pure iodine.
