Guinea pigs are great pets, though they are NOT Pocket Pets as, a hamster. They are intelligent social animals and want to "be with the family" as much as a dog would!

Yes, They are quiet but they Always want know where you are.

They like a rigid schedule, such as feedings at the same time. I recommend that you feed your pigs hay and pellets, that are made for guinea pigs( not rabbits pellets, as these do NOT have the vitamin C that they need),in the AM, and follow (at the same time) every PM with the fresh veggies. As for the amount: feed them about a 1/2 cup per pig of fresh veggies, one green and one other, such as carrots or apples. (I rotate on the latter).

*Make sure they have adaquate room in their cages for movement and "body space"-about 3 1/2 to 4 square feet per pig.

*Remember a pig IS social, a child's room is NOT the place for a guinea pig! They can be easly forgotten & whpo wants the heartache of a dehydrated (or worse) pig!

* They need lots of sunlight to metabolize the vitiman C that they require from an external source, (supplements or fresh veggies)-So place your pigs habitat, near an open window, but not so close that hey get sunburned.

*If you are NOT spending at LEAST an hour or more with your single pig-you >should buy a companioin pig to socailize your pet properly! Yes, they need this for psychological comfort!

Good luck on your pigs!

Fun facts I found on the internet:

  • A guinea pig is also called a "cavy."
  • A male guinea pig is a boar, the female is a sow, and baby guinea pigs are called pups.
  • The ears of guinea pigs are extremely sensitive to loud noises.
  • The teeth of guinea pigs are constantly growing.
  • Guinea pigs live about 5-7 years.

Because they live in "cages" their easy to clean up after. You don't want to let the thing roam around the house though because it will leave little poops everywhere. They eat vegetables, so you won't break the bank when food shopping. Overall, I'd say they were pretty decent pets.

Guinea pigs take a whole lot of care, but they make great pets for young children and adults who don't have time for larger pets. Here is a crash course in guinea pig ownership:

1) They cannot make their own vitamin C, so it is VERY important to provide it through food, supplemented water, and fruits like Oranges. You can usually buy liquid supplement for water for a low price.

2) Guinea pigs and other rodents do not fare well in cedar chip bedding. This can cause respiratory problems. A very good alternative is Aspen wood chips.

3) They are very social animals who do well in pairs or groups. They need to be taken from the cage and socialized EVERY day. One guinea pig can be perfectly fine on its own as long as you have the extra time to love and cuddle it.

4) They need large cages. When buying a cage, a rabbit cage may be your best bet if you're looking to get two piggies. The cage must be washed with dish soap, rinsed with a vinegar/water solution to get rid of pee stains, and flushed with water once a week at the most. Wash the bottle and bowl too!

5) You need to provide some adequate entertainment in the cage as well, especially if you're at work or school all day. Hanging toys and fun stuff should be placed everywhere, but make sure the piggy still has room to run around in there.

6) A large handful of Timothy Hay (funny name, but it's real) must be provided 24/7. Same with food. Give them about 1/4 cup of food for an adult female, 1/3 for an adult male. Most foods supply vitamin C, but read the package to make sure. Change the water, food, and hay that isn't consumed every 24 hours.

7) They enjoy going outside to graze on grass and dandelion greens. Be sure not to take them out in temperatures above 80 degrees F or below 60 degrees F. You can buy a playpen or put them underneath an overturned laundry basket. Keep a close eye on them and away from dogs or cats or large birds. Don't put them in direct sunlight or take them out at night. They DO sleep at night!

Here's a shopping list if you are buying supplies:

-A large cage. A piggy cage CANNOT be too big!

-Guinea Pig food, made for piggies only. Make sure it has vitamin C!

-Timothy Hay

-Liquid Vitamin C supplement for the water and/or food

-Porcelain or glass food bowl that cannot be overturned

-Glass water bottle/water bottle hanger (glass can be cleaned easier and lasts longer than plastic)

-Wood Shavings, NOT CEDAR CHIP!

-A plastic igloo or hidey house

-Toys and playthings

-The guinea pigs!

I know I've written you a novel here, but piggies take A WHOLE LOT more care than hamsters or gerbils. They have a fragile immune system and high stress hormones, so be careful about scaring them. Make sure you spend time choosing your piggy carefully so you get an animal you can live with. They live for 8-10 years if cared for!
