Norway's traditional Christmas customs include Nisse, a gnome or an elf guarding animals. It is said in Norway that Nisse can have goat-like features (Christmas Buck, or Julebukk in Norwegian). Children get bowls of a certain type of porridge ready for him - if they don't, he will play tricks on them. How is that for a traditional story for Christmas in Norway? The idea of Julebukk is a very old one and was most likely known by the Vikings. In earlier times during Christmas in Norway, one person dressed in goatskin (carrying a goat's head!) would come to the Christmas celebration unnanounced and act as if they were dying shortly afterwards. In the middle of the day we eat " Grøt ". When we are
done we give the "Grøt" to the " fjøsnisse" he is a santa that take care of the animals. when this is done we watch Christmas tv. Later on the day we eat " pinnekjøtt", "ribbe" or some kind of fish. Later on the day we open the presants.
In general, people gather at Christmas Eve, eat special Christmas food (varies depending on which region one is from -can be sheep, pork, cod or other food) and exchange gifts. Traditionally no stockings or gifts "from Santa".
During Christmas in Norway, it is traditional for a bundle of wheat to be left for birds outside, for rice porridge to be left for small gnomes called "Nisse" who are believed to bring presents along with "Julenissen" or Santa Claus. Children go Christmas caroling as in many other western countries. For helping the Norwegian people in World War II, the people of the UK are given a large tree every year which is displayed in Trafalgar Square.
