Opinion polls are an attempt to accurately measure the opinion of the public on an issue. They vary in quality depending on how and when they are taken and the questions they ask. Officials use them to help guide their decisions and please the public. Sometimes they use them to justfy their decisions. In this case, the questions are usually slanted to produce the answer they want.

As of 2013, public opinion is in favor of gay marriage by a small majority, about 53% or so in most polls.
Carefully designed polls which use scientifically designed sampling give a reasonably accurate reflection of public opinion at the time the poll was taken. Other polls such as the ones sent out by political parties use loaded questions and sent out mostly to known supporters of the party, tell very little about public opinion.
