Most of the people of Japan pray and worship ancestors and gods at Shinto shrines or private altars, while not identifying as "Shinto" or "Shintoist" in surveys. The Japanese have little meaning for these terms, or they define members in Shinto organizations or sects. In Japanese culture, they recognize religion as organized religions only, religions with specific doctrines and required membership. The people who are identified as "non-religious" in surveys actually mean that they do not belong to any religious organization, even though they may take part in Shinto rituals and worship.

Most Japanese at this point in time basically Atheists. They may pray once a year to the gods in the Shinto pantheon for good luck or blessings, but most Japanese see this as a cultural thing rather than an act of faith. The most common god invoked is Amaterasu.

The traditional Japanese religion in Shinto. Currently most of the religious people of Japan are either in: Christianity, Catholicism, Buddhism, Shinto etc. Shinto has lots of gods that are worshipped but some of the most notable ones are 天照大神(Amaterasu ookami) and イザナギ and イザナミ (Izanagi and Izanami). In Christianity and Catholicism, people worship God and Jesus, (And a bit more on mary in Catholicism). Buddhism don't really have a god to worship but to follow the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama.

Most Japanese people in Japan do not belong to a religion (84%). 64% state that they do ot believe in god or Buddha (55%). Studies indicating high numbers in religions may be due to family traditions (e.g. If the family were Shinto the government assumes the children are Shinto.)

Interestingly the Japanese (of Japan) draw on a wide number of religious ceremonies for life's transitions (Christian weddings, Buddhist funerals, etc.) and observe multiple religious festivals although there are no state sanctioned observances.
