arteries are blood vessels that take blood away from your heart and into your body. First the blood passaes through the right atrium then into the arteries where the blood is then deoxygenated and the oxygen is given to all your muscles.

Arteries carry blood away from the heart. They don't necessarily all have oxygenated blood in them. They are equiped with muscular coatings so as to withstand the heart's pressure and not burst due to the pressure. Their main function is to transfer blood away from the heart.

Arteries carry blood away from the heart.

Arteries can be divided into two groups: systemic arteries and pulmonary arteries.

Arteries in the systemic circulation carry red, oxygenated blood away from the heart to the body tissues.

Arteries in the pulmonary circuit carry blue, deoxygenated blood away from the heart to the lungs so that it can be reoxygenated at the alveoli (the sites of gas exchange in the lungs).

Whether blood in the arteries is red or blue depends on whether you are thinking of the systemic (where arterial blood is red) or pulmonary circuit (where arterial blood is blue).

What are veins and arteries?

Veins - veins run throughout the body, their main job is to deliver deoxygenated blood to the heart so it can get oxygenated and continue circulation. (They are usually are shown as color blue on the models of the circulatory system) Arteries - arteries are body's largest blood vessels. They main job/function is to take the oxygenated blood from the heart and deliver it to the rest of the body.(arteries branch out to capillaries and other smaller blood vessels).(they are usually shown as color red on models of the circulatory system)

What would happen if your arteries were missing?

Your heart pumps out blood in spurts. The muscles in your arteries smooth out your blood flow so that by the time your blood reaches your capillaries, your blood flows smooth and at low pressure. If they did not do their job, you would have internal bleeding.
