By "the numbers" I take it that you mean the numbers associated with the names of the Books - as in
- Genesis 3:20 And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.
- Matthew 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
In these cases, the first number refers to the chapter of the Book and the second number revers to which "line" of that chapter the individual verse is. So that, the first verse above is the twentieth verse in the third chapter of the Book of Genesis; the second one is the ninth verse in the fifth chapter of the Gospel according to St Matthew.
