The paschal candle represents that Christ is the Light of the World. It is made of pure beeswax to signify that Christ Himself was sinless, The wick represents His human nature, and the flame represents His divinity. There are also five grains of incense in the candle, to represent the oils used as the Body was placed into the tomb, along with the five marks; Jesus' hands, feet, and side. The candle is lit on Holy Saturday and is walked throughout the church to represent the eternal life in Christ. The candle is also inscribed with the Alpha and Omega letters from the Greek alphabet, along with the current year by the priest. It is lit every day through out the church year, ending on Ascension Thursday.

Water represents cleansing from sin in Baptism, the few drops of water mixed with the wine at the altar represent to indicate the union of Christ with the faithful and the blood and water that flowed from the side of Christ on Calvary. The paschal candle is symbolic of the risen Savior, Light of the World.
