One-way valves prevent the back flow of blood
There are tiny one way valves throughout a vein. These stop blood from flowing backwards. Interestingly, when these valves in veins in the legs malfunction, the result are varicose veins.

All veins, with the exception of those in the head and face, have one-way valves which prevent blood from flowing away from the heart, and helps prevent blood from pooling in dependent areas.
