"Very truly I tell you Pharisees, anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice."

Some words that describe a person who believes in God, but not in organized religion are:

  • UNITARIANISM: fits closest to answering the question. Unitarians frown upon dogmas and creeds while allowing individual freedom to decide what truth is. But the problem of making Unitarianism the perfect answer for this question is that some, not all, Unitarians take this freedom to an extreme, throwing out the whole concept of God altogether.
  • THEISM: the belief in the existence of a god or gods, esp. belief in one god as creator of the universe, intervening in it and sustaining a personal relation to his creatures. One who believes in theism is a THEIST.
  • DEISM: the belief in the existence of a supreme being, specifically of a creator who does not intervene in the universe. One who believes in Deism is a DEIST.
  • SPIRITUAL: Although dictionaries define spiritual as possibly religious, there is a distinct difference between spiritual and religious. To be spiritual is to have a belief in some form of creator God or gods, source or energy which can cause supernatural occurrences in the natural world. A spiritual person generally believes that he or she has a relationship with that God and does not necessarily believe that God acts by the sets of rules which others claim. Religious people, on the other hand, are groups of people who concur on a set of beliefs about the spiritual or a God or gods. So, a spiritual person believes in God but a religious person believes that God acts in a way which is defined and usually attends a house of worship where many other people believe the same thing.
