Eating the afterbirth is natural. It can help to stimulate milk production, and it's nutritious. However it can cause the mother to develop diarrhea, so if you wanted to dispose of the afterbirth, that's okay too.
After giving birth, the mother dog's food requirements increase as she produces more milk for her growing puppies. Be sure to give your dog free access to as much as a good quality puppy food that she wants (it has more of the nutrients she needs), as well as access to clean water.
