Some good spinal exercises include trunk lifts and planks, as these exercises do not add stress to your spine and help build and strengthen the muscle around your spine. To fix a disk, though, requires professional physical therapy.

Surgery isn't usually needed, but it may be considered if your symptoms haven't improved using other treatments, you have very severe symptoms, such as progressive muscle weakness, altered bladder or bowel function, or numbness around the genitals or anus . An open discectomy is a procedure to remove part of the disc that is pressing on a nerve.

What are the symptoms of a slipped disc in cats?

It's unlikely that a cat would have a slipped disc for two reasons: a) cats have short lives (what are the chances of a 14 year old human having a slipped disc?) b) cats are not bipedal organisms, therefore the pressure on their discs is minimal compared to ours. However, if a cat were to have a slipped disc, the symptoms would be impossible to determine without an MRI, as we cannot ask our cats to describe how they feel. If you suspect your cat of having a slipped disc, then take it to a vet. Though I should mention that any pinched nerve in a cat is more likely caused by a cyst than a herniation.

What are some common treatments for a slipped disk?

Chronic back pain, numbness, weakness are all symptoms of a slipped disk. Minor cases can be treated with cold and/or hot packs followed by stretching exercises as the condition improves. Only about 10 percent of slipped disc sufferers eventually have surgery. Indeed in severe cases surgery may be a last resort. The type of surgery will vary. Discectomy removes disk material that is pressing on a nerve; laminotomy removes a thin part of the vertebrae. Many procedures are performed with minimally invasive laser surgery.
