It is certainly not a behavior you would want to encourage in your dog, but is a natural instinct. The dog probably even thought it was doing something you would be proud of it for. If the opossum is dead, I would suggest burying it without the dog watching. Try to bury it somewhere the dog isn't going to dig it up. It needs to be somewhat deep so other scavengers aren't going to smell it out. Check your dogs face and front legs just to make sure it wasn't bitten or receive any injuries. If so, it probably won't be a serious wound, but you may want to call your vet to check it out. Other than that, there isn't too much else to do.

You might also wonder a bit if your dog has rabies. Finally, you can call the game warden or animal control in your county. That's their job.

if you are in Aussie don't do it but if u are are in new zealnad i encourage it please make your dog ill more possoms in new zealnad.

Nothing. Unlike humans, dogs are a lot more hard-wired, and they have a lot less choice in action as opposed to instinctive response. Ever wonder why a dog chases cars? It's an instinctive pattern dogs have as do wolves, cats, lions, and most mammalian predators. It's called "Prey Response". Fast moves followed by running in front of a dog turn this on. Electroencephalograms (EEG's) hooked to dogs during prey response show the dog isn't angry or being viscious, or even on combat mode. In fact they're usually calm. The impulses for this originate deep in the oldest parts of the brain and don't invovle anything like cognitive thought. This means that all dogs have prey response and it's impossible to remove. You can train them gently and carefully to overcome it, but it's a little like trying to train your electrical wiring. There's little conscious choice on the dog's part in the matter. I would strongly advise against negative reinforcement training in this case. As we're dealing with a hardwired instinctive response, it doesn't really hit the level of cognition, so the dog will have a hard time relating the negative reinforcement to the causal action -- he won't get it -- it'd be like punishing him for nothing at all. Bear in mind that you aren't the owners of Cujo or some lethal predator in doggy clothing. While lamentable, this sort of killing is something that all predators have inside them. It's very controllable with the right kind of training (which would focus on the dog knowing where you want him to stay until you tell him to move -- not training against prey response in particular). And it's not really a general threat. I know it's stunningly traumatic. Just undertsand your dog is the same loveable animal you started with, and this is something that dogs do, and humans need to know about and guard against.

If your dog kills a cat, you should discipline it.

Try to understand who provoked whom. It may be that the cat attacked the dog and it was only defending itself ... or vise versa. Chances are that the dog won't remember what he/she was being scolded for anyway.

I have three dogs - a large German shepherd and two small ones (About 15 pounds each).

The Shepherd has always been dominating over the Bischon - We had a dog behaviorilst come in because Buddy was so shy and we asked her about that; she said that she was basically just putting Buddy in her place.

Well, we had Buddy for about two years and this dog is my wife's baby (We do not have children) - I was coming home from when when she called me histarically that Buddy was dead.

Our German shepherd killed Buddy - he was on the floor and blood was all over the kitchen floor, living room floor ect. I'm heart broken and I think the only thing we can do is to have our shepherd put down in the morning.

I'm really torn because she doesn't show agreesion towards our other dog or cats and we've had her for 7 years... she was a rescue however (all of our dogs were) - We got her when she was 2-3 years old. Anyhow, she's very much my dog, so I'm torn that Buddy is dead, but now I'm going to loose my other dog as well.

I need to make sure its the right thing to do. My wife wants me to take her to the vet tomorrow morning to have it done.

There are two or three things you can do. One is to take the body to an emergency vet or vet and pay to have it cremated. Second is dig a hole in your yard and bury it. Finally, there are pet mortuaries who will take your pet and make a nice grave with a headstone. This can be very expensive.

put the dog down and save a cat from the rspca. if a dog kills a cat then it may also killl again or harm a human or kill a baby. If it kills Julia Gillard then that is ok.

A dog killed your dog. My dog was a terrier mix. A german shepherd killed your dog while your mom was walking your dog. The german shepherd came out of his home and ran to your dog and killed him.?

You should call animal control in your town and file a complaint. I would then sue the owner of the German Shepherd IF your dog was on a leash, the German Shepherd was NOT on a leash and IF your dog was not on the German Shepherd's property.I'm sorry for your loss, that is terrible :(

The dog came in my backyard and got killed by my dogs?

You are probably liable to some extent, depending on your local laws, because your dogs have shown aggression toward other dogs and killed one. Imagine if a child had wandered into your back yard and been killed: you'd definitely be liable then, too. Your dogs are dangerous and you should take action to make sure they pose no threat to anyone or any other dog, whether in your yard or not.
