∙ 12y agoBloat in calves (baby cows) is a life-threatening condition in which gas becomes trapped in the stomach and cannot escape. As the gas builds up, the stomachs expand until they either rupture or compress the chest cavity to the point the calf cannot breathe.
Treatment depends on the type of bloat - free or frothy. Free bloat is when a distinct gas cap develops in the stomach and is treated by removing the obstruction and/or running a tube down the calf's throat to give the gas an escape route.
Frothy bloat is when gas bubbles become trapped in the stomach. It is treated by oral drenching with a medication called poloxane - the drug breaks down the bubble walls, allowing the gas to escape.
