It is a stringed instrument which has been around for centuries. One end is held in the hand, the other end is tucked under the chin. The strings are vibrated to produce sound via a "bow" rather than plucking. A well known maker was Stradivarius.

You play a violin with a bow consisting of a stick with a ribbon of horse hair strung between the tip.
First, it is good to have a violin, a bow, rosin, a tuner of some sort, a soft cleaning cloth, and an introductory violin method book such as Suzuki Violin School Volume 1 or Essential Elements for Strings Volume 1. It is also good to have a private teacher to help you learn if you are not involved in a school orchestra (if you are of that age).
