-ase is a common suffix used to name various enzymes. So, as an example, a nuclease is an enzyme that cleaves nucleic acids and a telomerase is an enzyme that extends the telomeres. Both produce different outcomes yet both end with -ase.

It is my recollection that molecules ending in -ase (such as lactase) are molecules known as enzymes, which help to catalyze chemical reactions. Lactase, for example, is the enzyme which helps to break down the protein molecule lactose. People who are lactose intolerant cannot metabolize (break down) lactose because their bodies do not produce the necessary enzyme - lactase.
