Can a store accept third party checks?

They CAN, but very few DO accept "third party" checks. A "third-party" check is a check that someone else wrote to you, and now you're trying to get a third party - the merchant - to accept it. Most merchants refuse to accept them, because if the check bounces, you as the purchaser aren't on the hook for the value. Back in the day when most people were honest, there wasn't much of a risk. Now, when there's a significant minority of people who are NOT honest, there's too much risk. If somebody else wrote a check to you, then you should deposit it in your account, or take it to that person's bank to have it cashed. Don't expect the merchant to also provide banking services to you.

When depositing a check you receive what do you need to write on the back of the check?

You write your name as it is spelled on the front of the check. This signifies that the check was intended for you, to cash or deposit.

Do you sign the back of a check if you write a check to someone else?

If you are the maker of the check - that is, the person who is writing the check to pay someone else - you should sign on the front of the check and NOT on the back. The back of the check is for the payee's endorsement. The front of the check has a signature line for the maker to sign.

How does an individual endorse a check made out to their business?

To endorse a check made out to your business you just write for deposit only in the endorsement section on the back of the check.

Is cashiers check a cancelled check?

A cashier's check is not a cancelled check unless it has been cashed. A cancelled check is one that has already been cashed. Once you cash a cashier's check, the bank keeps it and you don't get it back. If you write a personal check, once it is cashed, that check will come back to you in your statement as the physical item which will be a cancelled check - or you will get an image of the cancelled check.

Are third party checks legal?

Yes, third-party checks are legal. A third-party check is a check where the original payee endorses the check over to another person or entity by signing the back of the check. However, some banks may have restrictions or policies regarding accepting or cashing third-party checks.

What is a second party check?

A "second party check" is a check where the payee is depositing or cashing the check. For example, Bob Smith writes a check to his brother John Smith. John Smith is the payee, (second party) who deposits the check into an account in his own name, or cashes the check. If John Smith wants to endorse the check on the back to a different person, that other person would be a third party. The check would now be a "third party check." Banks are likely to not accept this type of check if the third party tried to cash it, because they cannot verify endorsements.

Where should you endorse a check?

The person who writes the check must sign the line on the bottom right front of the check. However, to endorse a check over to the bank or other third party, the person (or institution) the check is written to must endorse the check on the back. There is almost always an "endorse here" area on the back followed by the words "do not write, stamp or sign below this line". The endorsement should go in this pre-assigned area.

What is the difference between personal checks and third party checks?

A personal check is written directly to you or to a business (example: to pay a bill). Third party checks are made out to someone else, then signed over to you. This basically means you are cashing the check for the person the check is made out to and will later cash or deposit it at your bank. Another term used meaning to sign over or sign the back of the check is "endorsed over".

How can one legally cash a third party check after it has been endorse on the back but the party that endorse it is no longer available?

Google "third party check". I will check back on this site to see if you get a good answer, but I have two huge checks that were signed over to me by relatives and NO ONE will cash them. I have to go back to the University they are drawn on and ask to have them re issued, or take the relatives to the bank with me and have their names added to my account. Each bank can dictate their own policy and it changes with whichever teller you get. All you can do is report them to the particular regulatory agency. Why doesn't anyone have to conform to the Uniform Cimmercial Code anymore? Meanwhile, how do we get the money?

When writing a check do you sign on the back?

When you write the check to another person, that person endorses the back when they cash it. If you write a check to "Cash", the bank may require that you endorse it before they will cash it.
