What does 'Iwo Jima' mean when translated into English?
硫黄島 or Iwo Jima (However, it should be properly transliterated
from Japanese as "Iōjima") when translated literally means "Sulphur
It's very interesting the first time you hear the proper
pronunciation since we're accustomed to saying the 'w' when in
actuality there is a long 'o' instead. As the previous poster
wrote, it's said いおうじま ioujima。
