Each satellite continually broadcasts a signal announcing the position of the satellite and the time according to its clock. This is done to great accuracy and with high precision. A GPS receiver collects data from 3 or more satellites, and by measuring the differences in received times from different satellites can fix its position to an accuracy of a few feet.
