Well it depends on which book you're talking about. In the first 2 he doesn't really like doing anything, but in the 3rd he loves laughing of all things! He also enjoys smoking good Shire pipeweed in his pipe.
Gandalf, along with the other 4 Istari, were sent to Middle-earth to help contest the will of Sauron and to unite all those who had the will to resist him. He was sent as a councilor, not as a soldier. When Gandalf is talking to Denethor in Gondor he calls himself a steward of Middle-earth.
I would not presume to know the habits of Gandalf the Grey. He wanders the lands of Middle-earth sometimes dropping in where he is needed(even if unwanted). He studies Hobbits in his spare time, and picked up the nasty habit of smoking pipe-weed from them.
Gandalf was originally known as Gandalf the Grey. After his rebirth, he became Gandalf the White in replacement of Saruman. Gandalf the Grey and after his resurrection he became Gandalf the White.

Yes gandalf is protagonist in the hobit
The inverted "Y"- like letter is a dwarvish rune (in Cirth -- dwarvish rune system), equivalent to the letter "G" in English. It's meant as Gandalf's signature.
He is part of the fellowship of the ring. He acted as their guide. He was gandalf the grey and then he returns as gandalf the white in 'the two towers.' To add to that he is awesome!
Frodo knows Gandalf because Gandalf was like Bilbo (Frodo's grand-uncle) guardian on Bilbo's adventures. Now, Frodo knows Gandalf through Bilbo.
