When a Naval Flight Officer or Naval Aviator went for their Mission Commander check ride they had to make sure that all the tools were accounted for, usually this is "hey are all the tools there?" "Yes sir, sign right here." The flight takes off and our guy shows up and says "hey I found this hammer." It's an automatic failure for the check ride. Thus he took on the name of Mission Commander Hammer or MC Hammer.
