As Marc Antony was well known as a friend and ally of Julius Caesar, the first thing Antony did when he learned of Caesar's assassination, was to fortify himself in his home. He did this fearing for his own life, based upon his close association with the fallen dictator. In fact the leading conspirator, Brutus had entertained killing Antony but decided not to do so. There is no definitive reason in historical documents that indicates why Antony was spared.

Antony next obtained all the papers and funds Caesar had left in his palace. At the same time he summoned all of Caesar's loyal military veterans to Rome.

Based on his authority as Tribune, Antony by March 27 convened the Senate and accepted Cicero's proposal for a general amnesty for anyone involved in Caesar's death. Antony also agreed that 2 of the main conspirators, Brutus and Cassius be given provincial governorships on the condition that the Senate ratify all of Caesar's outstanding decrees & appointments.

These acts were a clever deception to appear not to seek revenge against the conspirators.

Marc Antony was one of the only people that continued to stand by Caesar's side and support him, even after his affair with Cleopatra. (Another believer in Caesar was Caesar's second wife, Capurnia) At Caesar's funeral, Marc Antony ripped off Caesar's robe to show the people of Rome that Caesar had been murdered, and pointed out each person who had stabbed him.

Who was Marc Antony and Cleopatra?

Hollywood and William Shakespeare would have you believe that they were tragic lovers but the reality of their relationship was mainly political. Cleopatra was desperate to keep her dynasty alive and her kingdom independent. Antony was desperate for money to fund his eastern campaigns and by military victories, regain his status in Rome which had been undermined by Octavian. The two formed an alliance in which Cleopatra was given territories and honors and Antony was given the funding for his armies. Cleopatra used every means at her disposal, including sex, to hold Antony to their agreement and prevent him from returning to Rome.

What were two things that Marc Antony did?

Marc Antony has been unfairly labeled as one of history's greatest bunglers, but in reality he was a very capable leader when the chips were down. Julius Caesar certainly would not have left him in charge of Rome when he was away on his eastern campaign if he were unsure of his abilities. Marc Antony, acting as Caesar's advocate in the senate helped push through Caesar's agenda. He did this by his oratorical ability. He was a great public speaker. After Caesar's murder he implemented an agreement between Caesar's party and the assassins and their supporters.
