It tells the ecm where #1 cyl is and when to fire the plug and the injector.
It tells the computer the location of the camshaft as it spins. This info is used for fuel and ignition timing.

replace cam position sensor
The Crankshaft sensor and the Cam sensor monitor the position and or the speed of rotation of the crankshaft. Together they send signals to the ECM. The ECM uses that information along with info from other sensors to send spark and fuel to the cylinders at the correct time. Some engines only have only a crank sensor to perform that job. Other engines that have both crank and cam sensors that split the duties.
There is an intake and exhaust cam sensor, both are located at the front of the engine in the head. They have 2 wire/pin connectors. They intake cam sensor is the one on the driver's side. See orange circle in picture/link below.
the cam position sensor and ignition coil are inside the distributor. the crank position sensor is located on the bottom front of the engine, behind the belts on the left side.
The 1996 BMW 328 camshaft position sensor is located on the front of the cylinder head. The camshaft position sensor should be labeled as such.
Cam position is taken from the distributor, there is no external cam sensor.
The cam position sensor signals the fuel injectors to inject. The crankshaft position sensor signals the spark plugs to fire.

Cam position is taken from the distributor on this vehicle, there is no separate cam sensor.
The earlier single cam M20 engine has 12 valves. All post >91 525's have 24 valve twin cam power units.

The 94 and 95 are the same,no cam sensor.1996 and 1997 are differant in one way.The 1996 and 1997 have a cam sensor. .The 97 has a cam sensor and the 94 does not.The 1996 has a cam sensor too.
The cam position sensor is attached to the distributor, under the distributor cap. It is held in place with two screws.
