A dotted eighth note in 4/4 time will count as 1 e + (a) if the eighth note starts on beat 1. Press down a note, and as you first strike it say "1 e and a" lifting off on "a" since it only counts as 3 subdivided beats.

If a note has a dot next to it you add on an extra 50% of that note's value onto it (eg: a 2 beat length note dotted would equal a 3 beat length note)

If a note has a slightly bolder dot imeadiately above or below the note (bass or treble) then it means you play those notes sticcato (jump your fingers off the note as soon as you play it)

The dot increases the duration of the basic note by half of its original value. If the basic note lasts 2 beats, the corresponding dotted note lasts 3 beats. Try Goggle next time though.

It all depends where the dot is. If it is under the note it is shorter. If it is beside the note you add one beat.
