A Scientific name, or more correctly botanical name (for plants) or zoological name (for animals) is a unique Latin based descriptive name that is allocated to each and every living thing.

The name is based on a hierarchical classification system which was developed by Carl Linnaeus in the early 1700's - called binomial nomenclature (two names).

By using this system scientists, botanist, zoologists etc. avoid confusing specific species of animals (plants, bacteria etc.) which occurs when referring to them by common names.

For example if a zoologist was studying dogs he could accurately describe the specific type of dog out of the hundreds of different breeds that exist; that way his research could be checked or repeated with accuracy at a later stage.
