If Arsenal scores 1 and Liverpool 2 at Arsenal's home, and Arsenal scores 1 and Liverpool scores 0 at Liverpool's home, Liverpool goes to the next round because Liverpool scored two at Arsenal's home. A two-legged tie is a contest between two teams which comprises two matches or legs, with each team as the home team in one leg. The winning team is usually determined by aggregate score, the sum of the scores of the two legs. For example, if the scores of the two legs are:

• First leg: Team A 4--1 Team B
• Second leg: Team A 1--2 Team B

then the aggregate score will be Team A 5--3 Team B, meaning team A wins the tie.

If the aggregate score is a draw the team having scored the most goals in the away leg wins.

If still a winner cannot be decided, then the 2nd leg goes to extra time and then if necessary penalties. (note the away goals rule is still in place during extra time)
