first of all there is a drain and fill access point on the trans case under the car.. you dont fill it from the shifter.. once the fluid starts leaking out of the fill hole that means it is full.
A manual tranny does not take tranny fluid. So you can't check it. A manual tranny does not take tranny fluid. So you can't check it.
spy glass on side of tranny. it is of course a sealed tranny.
Check your shifter cable. Be sure the it is properly conncected at the tranny. Also if parked on a hill and the emergency brake was not set, it may need a little bit of force to pull the level out of park. Remember the shifter will not move unless the brake is applied.
there should be a rod that goes under the car from the shifter to the drivers side of the tranny it is called the shift cable if it is good and hooked up then check your neutral safety switch
You check and fill under the car on the side of the tranny a plug.
The shift cable usually doesn't break. The bushings on the shifter inside the cabin have been known to break, or the clips that hold the cable to the tranny fall off allowing the cable to come off the tranny. I would check these points first before replacing the cable.
Linkage from the shifter to the tranny might be broken, frayed, streched, or misadjusted, check that cable out and make sure its all set, if it is, the tranny may or may not be blown.
Going through a program on paper to check whether it has errors.

start up the vehicle and run through all the gears. then shut it off and go directly under the tranny pan. loosen up the bolt and drain the tranny fluid. when it is all drained, torque to bolt back on to the tranny pan at 25-30 lbs. then go back up to the engine compartment, where you check your tranny fluid level, and put about 5 quarts of tranny fluid in. then start your car up again, run through all the gears and check the fluid level again while the engine is running. add more fluid if you need to. if there is too much, drain a little bit out and check it again.
